Did you notice that your Google My Business listing has already been claimed? You don’t know how to recover ownership of your Google My Business listing? Don’t panic, we’ll explain to you how to do it!
How to recover the ownership of a Google My Business listing?
It is possible that a Google My Business profile of your business already exists without you having ownership of it. The business profile may have been claimed by someone else, such as a previous employee, or you may not remember the email address you used to create it. In either case, you can easily regain ownership of your Google listing.
Here’s everything you’ll need to do:
- Go to Google and search for your Google My Business page.
- At the bottom of the business profile click on “Own this business?”.
If the listing has not already been claimed, simply click on “Manage now” to retrieve ownership of it.
If, on the other hand, someone has already claimed the profile, you will be presented with a screen saying that another user may already be managing the profile. In this case:
- Click the blue “Request Access” button.
- Fill out the request form by entering your name, phone number, and the access level you wish for. Specify whether you are the owner or an employee of the business in question.
- Submit the form to request access from the person who has already claimed your business.
What to do after requesting the listing’s ownership?
Once you submit your listing’s ownership request, the current owner will receive an email with your request and will have up to 7 days to respond. During this time you will be able to check the status of your request on the confirmation email that will be automatically sent to you.
If your request is accepted you can officially manage your Google My Business profile without any problems. If the current owner of the tab rejects your request you will then have to appeal by sending all the documentation available to you to attest that you are the owner of the business in question.

How long does it take for ownership of the listing to take effect?
When your request is accepted and you are added as a new owner of the Google My Business profile card, you will have to wait 7 days before the change of ownership becomes effective and you can manage your business profile. During these 7 days you will not be able to delete the Google My Business profile in question, remove other owners and managers from the profile, or add new users.
Why is regaining control of your Google My Business profile important?
If you do not recover your Google My Business listing, you will not be able to manage it. Any changes you make on your profile will be recorded as suggested by a user and not as official. Also, you will not be able to respond to your customers’ reviews or publish Google Posts.
When your profile is not verified, moreover, there is a risk that someone else will claim ownership of it by adding their phone number and information. Therefore, to avoid all these problems, we recommend that you claim the profile of the business you manage as soon as possible.
